simon-dach-fountain
The Simon-Dach Fountain was created in 1912 in the Theater street in the heart of the old town of Memel by the sculptor Arnold Künne with the help of donations of the people of Memel in memory of the poet Simon Dach who was born here.
The fountain sculpture is reminiscent of the most famous work of Simon Dach, the folksong Cute Little Anny. In 1988, citizens from Klaipedia decided to build a new Cute Little Anny monument with the help of Germans. Because the original had disappeared, the sculptor Harald Haacke created based on old photos and a little plaster doll a new figure. This was in 1988 cast in bronze. In 1989, the new fountain at the old square was inaugurated in front of the Municipal Theatre. |
