Dvůr Králové nad Labem
Home of the river Elbe
Labem or in German Elbe begins here in the orthen parts of the country. Today though the city is best known for its zoo
Neumann villa
Neumann villa dominates the classical part of the zoo in Dvur Kralove. The villa allegedly copies a castle, which is situated near Vienna. It was built in 1905-06 as a summer palace for the factory owner Richard Neumann. In 1945 the building was nationalized and the Ethnographic Museum subsequently was placed in the summerhouse. On its grounds in 1946 was opened to the public a zoo with several species of European fauna. In 1969, an initiative of the former zoo director Ing. Josef Vagner was to build up an extensive gallery of animalistic evolution of life on Earth that is shown in the villa. Currently, the headquarters of the zoo and the exhibition Zdeněk Burian "Prehistory through the eyes of Zdenek Burian" numbering 147 paintings is here.
