Château de Vincennes
Only traces remain of the earlier castle and the substantial remains date from the 14th century. The castle forms a rectangle whose perimeter is more than a kilometer in length (330 x 175m). It has six towers and three gates, each originally 13 meters high, and is surrounded by a deep stone lined moat. The keep, 52m high, and its enceinte occupy the western side of the fortress and are separated from the rest of the castle by the moat. The keep is one of the first known examples of rebar usage.[4] The towers of the grande enceinte now stand only to the height of the walls, having been demolished in the 1800s, save the Tour du Village on the north side of the enclosure. The south end consists of two wings facing each other, the Pavillon du Roi and the Pavillon de la Reine, built by Louis Le Vau.

Hotel de ville
Built between 1887 and 1891, the hotel de ville or town hall of Vincennes was designed by architect Eugene Calinaud. The Paris City Hall stood as model. It was constituted at the beginning of the Third Republic
Several different materials were used in its construction (stone from Euville, Saint-Maximin and Chauvigny...). The rapid population growth of Vincennes made it necessary to expand the town hall, which was then too small. The new town hall was inaugurated on March 25, 1935. The neo-Renaissance aesthetic of the whole is beautifully preserved. It is notable for the monumental staircase and glass dome of 12.20 meters in diameter and 30 tons, both listed as historic monuments. In 1999, the Regional Commission of heritage and sites inscribed on the additional inventory of historic monuments all facades and roofs of the town hall, two lobbies, the village hall, to the Hall of Weddings and the office of first deputy mayor, located at the southwest corner of the ground floor. |
Quartier Carnot
The Republican Guard has two infantry regiments, a cavalry regiment, a staff and musical groups. Two of the three cavalry squadrons are based at Carnot area, just behind the castle of Vincennes.
Every year in September, the Carnot Quarter Republican Guard opens to offer the general public demonstrations or "special training", showing the plume and rigor of the old mounted regiments. |
