The city between 2 capitals
Györ is a peacefull city right in the middle between Budapest and Vienna. So to speak it stood in the centre of the former Austria-Hungia empire. Not many tourists come here, so if you wanna have a day off and meet real Hungary this might be the place. Especially its old town with several shopping street is really cosy.
Benedictine church of St. Ignatius of Loyola
The church was built by the Jesuits on the basis of the plans of Baccio del Bianco in 1634-41, the plot was donated in 1626 by the bishop of Győr Miklos Dallos. The church towers were completed in 1650. The 1740s designed to present shape of the church nave. The high altar was donated. In 1773, Maria Theresa announced the dissolution of the Jesuit order, frome 1802 the Benedictines owned the church.
The church is 44 meter long and a 24 meters broad, the height of the towers are 44 meters tall. It can accommodate up to 600 people. The church is the main layout is based on the church Il Gesù in Rome. Above the stone-framed door number indicates the year of the consecration of the church 1641. In addition to the front door, consists of two statues in niches above the door of a volute and the two towers framed gable above the cab of a statue again. The ship flat, chest covered with barrel vault. The entrance to grasp at a glance the great high altar, which opens up a magnificent stage - acoustic and optical point of view is well close to the sanctuary. The main altar of the Baroque theatrum sacrum scenery of the remaining marble replica and baroque decoration grand master Andrea del Pozzo altar paintings. The main altar was made in 1743-44.The statues are carved by Joseph Rossler. The monumental altarpiece depicts the glorification of St. Ignatius of Loyola. 1744 by Paul Troger. The four large gilded wooden statue of St. Peter, St. Joseph, St. John of Nepomuk and St. Paul portrays. The pulpit dating from 1749, with its shining, dazzling Baroque and Rococo atmosphere was made by Ludwig Gode. The church's organ in was made by Burghardt Gaspar in 1757. |
new town hall
The town hall was built in neo-baroque style,it's U-shaped, has two-story's, in the middle is a clock tower and historic facade of the main tower jutting two smaller buildings. It is the symbol of the city.
The first known town hall is from the 16th century. The present old town hall was built between 1753-74. In the second half of the 19th century it has been repeatedly mentioned that the rapidly developing and growing Győr need a new town hall. On 30 November 1893 a national competition was made lasting 3 months. The contest received 16 entries. The first place did go to Ignatius, the second to Hübner Eugene, the third to Hofhauser Anthony. All three candidates exceeded the specified framework of HUF 200 000, so the winning plans had to be modified. Alpár Ignatius did not accept the job because of other activities. So the choice fell on Jeno Hübner, who signed the assignment contract on 29 September 1894. The building was errected 1898-1900 |
